Airlines help boost tourism Kate Russell

Nelson Airport has recorded a dramatic 23 per cent increase in the number of passengers flying in and out of the region, helping fuel the region’s bumper tourism season. Nelson Airport chief executive Rob Evans says the passenger numbers jumped by 16,000, from 67,293 in December 2014 to

83,261 in December 2015 – a new record for the airport. It’s on the back of three new airlines operating to the region and it’s having a wide impact, with representatives from tourism, retail, food and accommodation sectors all saying it’s been the best tourism summer for years. Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive Lynda Keene says that “Nelson is shining,” and has re-

ceived nothing but positive feedback from all sectors. “Despite a bit of rain, it’s going

fantastic - it’s been bumper season so far.” She says the city and retail area are “absolutely buzzing,” and foot traffic at Nelson i-SITE was up 15 per cent this summer, which indicates that there have been more visitors to the region, and numbers are already tracking ahead for January. “We’ve had visitors from all countries around the world. We’re re-

ally lucky with the Mapua and Kaiteriteri developments, which have also been very busy.” She says the launch of new airlines Jetstar, Originair and Kiwi Regional Air in 2015 has definitely made an impact on tourist numbers this summer. Tasman’s Great Taste Cycle Trail has also proved to be a popular

COOLING OFF: Lily Stewart, Nikau Parker and Izzy Stewart dive into summer by jumping into the waves off Rocks Rd on Saturday. The girls were among hundreds of beach-goers who took to the water to cool off during the hot weekend. The heat has helped the pools too, with Nayland Pools seasonal manager Nick Stuart says they’ve had a lot of people coming through the doors, just wanting to cool off. “It been quite busy and quite steady throughout January, especially on the really hot days.” The Metservice says rain is due to fall in Nelson today [Tuesday] but clear for the rest of the week. However, rain is also forecast for the region from Sunday for most of next week. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

“Yes, its definitly busy. It’s good for the area and brilliant for businesses because in winter it’s dead. It’s nice to have new people around.”

“I actually thought it was busier last year. It’s good though - it livens up the place. I’ve seen lots of people on the beach.

“I have noticed - I’ve been here all the way through. There have been lots of big families around so there’s been a nice buzz and a fun family atmosphere.

summer attraction, with trail counters recording 13,000 users during the 11 day Christmas and New Year period, compared with 9000 for the previous year. Chair of the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trust Gillian Wratt says Kaiteriteri is a particularly popular section, with user numbers tripling, compared with this period 12 months ago. Nicky McBride of Wheelie Fantastic, located at Mapua, says they’ve had a big increase of international cyclists. “We expect numbers to continue to grow. It is our fifth season and it is shaping up to be our busiest.” Tahuna Beach Holiday Park general manager Marcel Fekkes says that they have been “totally chocca,” and it’s the first time in years that they’ve had to turn people away. “It’s definitely busier than last year,” he says. “We’ve had an influx of international visitors this year, and a lot more walking traffic too – people have been

wandering in asking for sites.” Motel Association of New Zealand Nelson branch administration officer John Gilbertson says the region’s motels have also been busy during the statutory break, but says it’s too early to tell what the season in total is going to be like. “It’s been going well, and we’ve been busy so far,” he says. “We are predicting that the new airlines will make a difference.” The Abel Tasman National Park is also proving to be a hot spot, with a surge of both international and kiwi visitors this summer. Brendan Alborn, owner of Abel Tasman Aqua taxi, says they have been busier than last year, which he puts down to a combination of the New Zealand dollar being weak, better promotion from the tourism sector, and more kiwis out and about doing activities and spending more money. “It’s been a fantastic season,” he says. “There have just been so many people around. The season started early and has kicked on - it’s been crazy.”

He says the recent rain hasn’t made any impact on business either. “People tend to either guts the rain out, or pay attention to the forecast,” he says. “After a rainy day we’ll be inundated with people, so it averages out.” Vic Brew Bar general manager Phil Williams says the bar had an earlier start to the season and that his staff have noticed more overseas tourists this year. And it seems the good times may not be coming to an end just yet. Lynda says winter is also shaping up to be busy, especially with the arrival of Jetstar’s Nelson to Wellington flights and the return of some events, such as Light Nelson. Rob Evans says he’s been struck by how many people are in the airport throughout the day. “It’s just the consistency of it. We’re busy from the moment we open up at 6am right through to the last flight. It gets a bit cosy in here at times but it’s a good news story that shows the confidence in the region.”

Rodeo president: This one could be the last Simon Bloomberg

The cowboys won’t be the only ones holding on for dear life at the Richmond Rodeo at the A and P Showground in Richmond on Saturday. The future of the Richmond Rodeo itself will also be hanging in the balance with organisers saying this year’s edition could be the last unless a big crowd turns out to save the day. Club president Ian Parkes says the rodeo has been losing money for the last three years and a fourth consecutive loss could spell the end for the event. Ian says the main reason for the losses has been the increasing costs associated with staging the rodeo, combined with crowd numbers which have remained static at about 2000. “All the people who help out are volunteers but we still have to pay to get the officials here and provide their accommodation. We also have to transport the bulls up from North Canterbury and the broncs from Waimate and pay prize money for the competitors. “A lot of the administration costs have gone up, too. It used to cost us $70 for a liquor licence now it costs us $700, so it all adds up.

Action from last year’s Richmond Rodeo. Photo: Marc Palmano/Shuttersport. “We’ve lost money for the last three years and we’ve all just about had enough. If we don’t have a successful rodeo on Saturday and get a big crowd, it could be the last one.” Ian says the club has been also been battling “unfounded” negative publicity created by animal rights group SAFE which has had a “small impact” on support from sponsors. He says SAFE’s criticism that rodeo is cruel to animals is misguided, and that the bulls and broncs on the rodeo circuit are “well looked after and respected and lead good lives”. “We have had the bulls stay on our farm and they are that quiet they will eat out of your hand. They wouldn’t do that if they were scared or timid or wild. “The alternative for many of the rodeo animals is much crueller too. Some of the broncs

would be dog tucker by now if they weren’t rodeo horses.” Richmond Rodeo Club secretary Tina Angus-Phyn says the rodeo has always been a popular stop on the summer rodeo circuit, attracting many of the country’s top cowboys and cowgirls, and this Saturday’s edition is no exception. Glamorous Australian Rodeo Queen Latoya Wards will be a special guest at the rodeo while a number of Nelson showjumping riders will be saddling up for the barrel racing. Tina says there will also be prizes for the best dressed preschool and primary schoolaged children in the Miss Cowgirl and Mr Cowboy contest. Tina says the contest will start at about 2pm and contestants can enter on the day. The rodeo will be held at the A & P Showgrounds in Richmond starting at 1pm. Tickets are available at the Richmond Mall or at the gate, with entry costing $15 for adults, $10 for college students, intermediate children $5, primary school children free and family passes $45. A post-rodeo party, featuring the band Kicks will be held at Armadillos on Queen St in Richmond from 6pm, with all welcome.

Crash closes Nelson Airport: A small aircraft crashed onto the Nelson Airport runway on Wednesday afternoon, closing the airport temporarily. The airport’s CEO, Rob Evans, says the male pilot was performing a training flight. “It’s just a small single engine aircraft belonging to Pacific Pilot Training,” says Robert. The male pilot was alone in the aircraft and walked away from the crash without any serious injuries.

says the Wai-iti River at Brightwater Bridge is the only site that still has notable concentrations of the potentially toxic cyanobacteria algae. Rob encourages people to continue to take care with dogs and small children around the water. The algae are known to be deadly to dogs and pose a potential health risk to humans, with the toxins capable of causing vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, cramps, and nausea when ingested. It is wise to not enter the water where the algae are visibly building up. “We’re doing weekly monitoring of

Pedestrian crossing vanishing act: A mysterious pedestrian crossing appeared in Collingwood overnight and vanished as quickly as it came. The crossing was hand-painted onto the tarmac on Tasman St late last week, and was reportedly used by locals until it was removed by the council. The white lines were painted onto the road in front of Collingwood On the Spot and Collingwood Memorial Hall. Some locals believed it was done by people who had been drinking at Tinky’s, the local tavern. Collingwood On the Spot owner Craig Bishop-Everett says, “There’s a few rumours floating around. A lot of people have been talking about it.”

‘Neighbour poisoned our trees’ Simon Bloomberg

A Richmond family is appalled by the deceitful behaviour of a “neighbour from hell” who is alleged to have deliberately poisoned 40 shelter trees on their property. Jill and Bernard Kearns planted the shelter trees 26 years ago when they purchased two hectares of bare land on Hill St North to set up a lifestyle block. The land adjacent to their property was subdivided about three years ago and last August Jill and Bernard paid an arborist $2500 to top the trees to allow more sunlight into their new neighbours’ properties. However, Jill says one of their six neighbours still wasn’t happy and late last year poisoned about 40 of the 80 trees by pouring herbicide and diesel into holes that had been drilled into the trunks. The trees are now dying, leaving the Kearns and the other neighbours, “who are all wonderful,” disappointed they are living next to a “neighbour from hell”. Jill says she knows who did it but won’t name the person because of legal considerations. There are 80 trees in the shelter belt and only the ones adjacent to the neigh-

place smelled of diesel too. “About two weeks later, we noticed some of the trees were dying and we found the holes that had been drilled in trunks. So my husband went and saw him and asked if he did it, but he denied everything. “We called the police and they

interviewed him too, but he said he didn’t do it. It’s frustrating, but we can’t do anything because we don’t have enough solid evidence. “We have some wonderful neighbours and I know they are all disappointed too. It’s a shame that one bad egg is ruining it for everyone.”

The police officer who investigated the complaint, senior constable Glyn Cunningham, says the trees have “definitely been deliberately poisoned” but they can’t prove who committed the “disgusting act”. “It’s a selfish and nasty thing to do and we’ve spoken to a person about it, but they denied it was anything to do with them. There is not a lot we can do without evidence.” Jill says she could possibly understand the neighbour’s frustration if the trees had been newly planted and were growing too big. However, the neighbour “brought their house knowing the trees were there and then came around and complained about them”. Jill says they thought they were being good neighbours when they paid to get the trees topped to reduce the shading, but “obviously that wasn’t enough for this person.” She isn’t sure what they will do with the dying trees which provide important shelter for their orchard. “I went out to the orchard after the big wind we had a week ago and there were plums on the ground everywhere. That hasn’t happened before.”

A retired Nelson businessman is meeting a growing demand for pet funeral caskets as more and more people want to give their deceased dogs, cats, budgies, rabbits and even donkeys a loving send off. Wal Dalley, aged 71, is making about 700 pet caskets a year from his Richmond-based workshop with most of his products going to Otago, Southland and NelsonTasman. He makes 17 different models of casket as well as memorial plaques for pets that can be engraved and placed on a tree or in the garden. Although Wal says vets are asked to dispose of the majority of pets that die or get put down, a growing number of pet owners want something special for their deceased companions and place their ashes in a casket. That number has increased to about one in eight over the last 20 or 30 years, resulting in a demand for the small pet caskets that Wal makes in his container workshop on Gladstone Rd. "A lot of people treat their pets like a member of the family and don't like the idea of just disposing of them when they die," Wal says. "About one in eight pet owners get their deceased pets cremated and put their ashes in a casket instead, so there's quite a demand for these things. "I make quite a few different models for all the different sized-dogs -

if you make one for a Rottweiler it's got to be quite big. I've also made them for cats, budgies and rabbits, and I even made one for a donkey." Wal says he started making the caskets when he lived in Wingatui near Dunedin, where he owned a small business making farm gates for lifestyle blocks. He had earlier worked as a business manager for Haywrights and Knees Industries and run his own furniture shop in Dunedin. "The guy down the road started doing pet cremations and he asked me if I could repair one of the caskets and that's how we got into making new ones. That was 12 years ago and now we've retired to Nelson and I'm still working, making about 700 a year." Wal also makes wooden stools, garden stakes and beehive boxes. He has even made some massage tables specifically designed for a masseuse who had limited movement in their artificial knee. "I get those sorts of jobs through word of mouth, but I only really want to work three mornings a week. I was managing a national business with 2000 staff when I was 34, but these days I'm working on my own out of a container and about six hours a day is my maximum."

Weeds start to takeover Stoke stream

WEEDS ATTACK STREAM: Weeds grow around the edges of Stoke's Orchard Stream Garden. One Stoke resident wants Nelson City Council to do something about it before they kill some of the native plants that are growing around the stream. Photo: Kate Russell.

Kate Russell Stream edges in parts of Stoke have become “rampant” with weeds, which are so thick that one resident has deemed them to be a flood risk. Marye Miller contacted the Nelson Weekly, concerned about the amount of what she says are “noxious weeds” growing up in amongst native plants in and around the Orchard Stream Garden, and other parts of the stream along The Ridgeway and further up Marlowe St. She says she has noticed that the weeds have been growing progressively over the last year, and despite contacting Nelson City Council three times about the weeds, she has not been given any answers. “We moved here November 2014 and remarked how neat and tidy the stream banks were,” says Marye, who walks her dog along the path by the stream most days. “Now you can hardly even see there is a stream there.” The main noxious weed she has seen is Tradescantia Fluminensis - commonly known as Wandering Willy or Wandering Jew, which is considered an “invasive species” or “pest plant.” She has also noticed buttercup, sticky weed and arum lilies along the stream edges. “They climb up through the plants and basically smother them," she says. A spokesman from Nelson City Council says Marye's messages were received and they are aware of the weeds, which they believe to be “problem weeds,” rather than noxious. Alec Louverdis, Group Manager Infrastructure at the council says that spraying work has been carried out on the worst of the weeds, and a follow up control has been programmed for after the holiday break. He also says the weeds are very difficult to control with the chemicals they are able to use along and within stream systems. Since the Weekly contacted the council on Thursday, Marye says it looks like someone has been there and chopped some of the weeds out, but have just left them on the banks. “There has been a bit of spraying since Thursday, but not on the creeping weeds as far as I can make out,” she says. “I can see they have chopped the arum lilies, but left the bulbs.” Marye's husband, who is a green keeper, says the weeds are, indeed noxious and would also like to see the area properly maintained.

Local sketch artist Robbie Burns, who used his wife as a muse, was one of over 50 artists who displayed their work at the Queens Gardens Art Exhibition on Saturday. The gardens were transformed with colour on Saturday for the annual exhibition, which featured everything from paintings, mosaics and garden art, to glass, photography, and woodwork. Committee member Heather Plowman says everyone drifting through loved the interaction with the artists Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Well done, Wattie... a great outcome to a potentially tragic situation. Sharyn Purves.

There is definitely a lesson to be learnt here for all parents. Do not take the ocean for granted, Mother Nature is in charge. Pamela Parker.

Thank you Jetstar: As a recent traveller on Air New Zealand from Nelson, it was a great surprise on checking-in that the staff handling our checked luggage were almost pleasant and were on the cusp of being courteous. On boarding the air craft via a modern well-constructed ramp, we were greeted, as always, by a very pleasant member of the cabin crew, the aircraft was clean and comfortable. The whole experience was almost pleasant. Thank you Jetstar, as without your presence in Nelson we would probably still be experiencing the "take it or leave it" attitude from Air New Zealand. Wow? A lesson for all locals there, we all think Rabbit island is so safe and forget that pool toys are just that and the sea doesn't play nice sometimes. Nola Timpson. Criticism of councillors: I join those not impressed by the behaviour of those councillors apparently forming a subversive sub-group within the council. The same few, every time. Their attack on Eric Davy was inexcusable (was Luke Ackland the real front man on this?). And preventing reliable, affordable wood burners from being available to those needing them in their homes smacks of eco-fascism - as well as callousness. Nelson does not have a major pollution problem, and never did. There's been too much of a beatup on this all around (as with the grandstanding over prioritising cycling) and the public is tired of shameful excuses to avoid the reality of denying people decent, warm housing. We need to dump this council, except for the always

Wishing tree success: In its 21 years, never have the contributions of the New Zealand community been so generous. With 44,392 gifts collected this year, and with a further $19,000 in donations, Kmart and our charity partner The Salvation Army are humbled by the amazing generosity of New Zealanders who give to the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal at Christmas time. The people of Nelson should be proud of their generosity. Donating an impressive 1,445 gifts to the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal at Kmart Richmond, your contributions have meant struggling families and kids can also experience the joy of Christmas in what can be a stressful financial time for those living paycheck to paycheck.

We know how much it means to those who hit hard times, to know that people out there care and are willing to support any way that they can during Christmas. On behalf of the entire Kmart team and our friends at The Salvation Army, I give my heartfelt thanks for your contribution. You are the real Santa’s helpers of the season. Camrin Holmes, store manager, Kmart Richmond. Menzshed fire: How absolutely devastating. Gut wrenching after all that hard work. Anne Smirnov. Aw no, I have a few friends who talk about how awesome this place was to go. I hope a new set up can be done somewhere. Shawnee Burford-Young. Woodburner debate: I agree that it's a shame our "seven pillars of wisdom" voted against affordable (and non-polluting) woodburners. There may be some fresh candidates for the council election. But if negative campaigning is to start already, the name to be remembered is the proven liar's (see the 15 December Nelson Weekly, p.6). Ren Kempthorne. Snorkellers get a close look at Cable Bay marine life Jessie Johnston

Around 140 people turned up at Cable Bay on Sunday to experience life under the sea. The community guided snorkel day was organised by Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) in order to educate people on the creatures that call the sea home and spark an interest in people for our local marine reserves. “What we want to do is give people a marine experience up close underneath the water in their local environment and raise their awareness of the Horoirangi marine reserve. It’s also about getting local people to develop a connection with the marine environment, with the idea that with that connection, perhaps there will be more care and interest in their marine environments,” says or-

ganiser Megan Wilson. Experience was no barrier with kids and adults of all ages taking part, under the guidance of practiced local divers from the Nelson Underwater Club. “We were actually going to do the Cable Bay walkway and we saw this advertised and I thought it would be quite a cool idea. It seemed like a really nice and easy set up to have a go,” says Kanishka Jayasena of Stoke. A total of 154 people were involved in the day including the guides and other volunteers. The Cable Bay snorkel day was one of many that are being held throughout the country thanks to EMR, Sunday’s event made possible with additional support from Whenua Iti Outdoors, Port Nelson, Nelson Underwater Club and the Department of Conservation.

Menz Shed, Tuesday, January 12: Founder of the burned down MenzShed, Rex Lucas, says things are looking up since last week’s article in the Weekly from which he and his wife received an influx of support from locals. The Oceania Group have also agreed to give the community another workshop. “They are going to replace the shed, replace the workshop and replace the tools, and they want only the best,” says Rex’s wife, Pam. The area has now been cleared and stands ready for new sheds, but Rex says it will take some time before the new workshop is up and running once more. The fire brigade has yet to confirm the cause of the fire but Rex says they suspect it may have been an electrical fault. Road Hogs, Tuesday, January 12: Since their article in the Nelson Weekly, owners of indoor mini golf business Road Hogs, Troy and Joanne Warring, say they have been inundated with enquiries about taking on the business for free. About 100 emails have hit their inbox, including people interested from overseas, plus, Troy says he has even created a national news interest with his business proposition, including TV interviews and Mike Hosking's radio show. Troy is now in negotiation with around three people and he hopes to have a result by the end of the week. Victory Community Centre, Tuesday, December 8: The Victory Community Centre have reached their target of raising $60,000 to help keep it afloat. Director Kindra Douglas says she has been blown away by the generosity of the Nelson public, and they made their target just before Christmas. All up, they received $12,000 though their Givealittle page and general donations, plus some large donations to help pull them through. “One individual gave us $2000, which was amazing,” says Kindra. “Sometimes all you need to do is put the call out and people will respond.” They have also formed a new fundraising group and are planning some exciting events for 2016.

New line pricing from 1 April 2016

Network Tasman’s prices cover the cost of its local distribution network and the cost of national transmission of electricity. These are a portion of the price charged by retailers to consumers within the Network Tasman coverage area. Network Tasman’s distribution price will not be changing in 2016, but the transmission price will increase due to increased charges by the national grid owner, Transpower. Overall, the impact on average domestic power bills is a 0.6% network charge increase, adding around 32 cents per month or $3.80 annually. It may not be the America’s Cup but the Nelson Regatta, alongside the inaugural Liquorland Top of the South Trailer Yacht and Sports Boat Regatta, are set to create an exciting week of racing in the Tasman Bay. The region is proud of its long-standing nautical history, with yacht races dating back to European settlement. Nelson’s affair with the sea as a means of leisure began in 1843 when the first official yacht race was staged, setting off a chain of events which led to the establishment, in 1857, of New Zealand’s earliest yacht club, the Nelson Yacht Club. With the accessibility of the Abel Tasman National Park, Nelson truly is a sailor’s dream location, and from January 22 to January 27 it will set the scene for a celebration of New Zealand Yachting thanks to hosts Tasman Bay Cruising Club and all their generous sponsors. By introducing the Liquorland Top of the South Regatta for the trailer boats, Tasman Bay Cruising Club hope to give out-of-town sailors the chance to spend some time cruising around the Tasman Bay and Abel Tasman National Park, with some friendly competition thrown in, of course. Racing for the trailer boats kicks off with an invitation race on Friday night. The inner harbour race starts and finishes at the Nelson Yacht Club on a circular course running up and down the waterfront, offering people the chance

Scientists are getting excited about NZ Blackcurrants the first supplement that may increase fat burning when exercising. NZ Blackcurrants have one of the highest nutrient and antioxidant densities of any commercially grown fruit in the world. The subject of growing International scientific interest, research is highlighting how NZ Blackcurrant compounds may be effective for enhancing longevity and health, as well as disease prevention. In two studies from the University of Chichester UK, Sujon Blackcurrant Powder delivered impressive fatburning gains for endurance cyclists and improved endurance in runners undertaking maximal sprints. NZ Blackcurrants are the first to be found to contain polyphenol, which can influence fat metabolism and oxidation to such a degree during low and moderate exercise, which may have major performance implications. Studies showed: • Fat burning increased by 27 per cent at moderate exercising intensities and 15 per cent at low intensity • Helps reduce the rise of lactate by up to 14 per cent at maximum effort • Increased blood flow for faster tissue repair and clearance of lactate • Delays fatigue and enhances running endurance by an average 11 per cent. Gold miners in the Tasman district are angry at claim jumpers who are costing them thousands of dollars by illegally dredging in areas where they don't have a permit. New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals, which regulates gold mining in this country, last year received three complaints about claim jumpers from permitted gold miners operating in rivers around the Tapawera district. All three miners had paid NZPM for a permit to mine gold in a section of river but then arrived at their mining sites to find that a claim jumper had already dredged the area. NZPM's principal compliance advisor Jackie Adams says "this is completely unacceptable” and he is warning claim jumpers that they face serious consequences if they are caught. "Under the Crown Minerals Act, any person who commits an offence of mining without an appropriate permit can face a term of imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to $400,000 on conviction. "Small scale mining with a suction dredge is permitted by the Tasman District Council, but all gold miners still need a permit. Any gold mining has to meet New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals criteria under

a suction dredge that is used to mine gold in rivers. the Crown Minerals Act." Jackie says the Tapawera gold miners he spoke to are "highly annoyed" that people are jumping their claims. Although all three permits were for small scale mining, he says the claim jumpers are effectively stealing gold from the Government and denying the permit holders a potential income. "They have paid a couple of thousand dollars for the permit and then pay $500 a year for fees and royalties on top of that. You can understand why they are annoyed - I imagine it could get quite heated if they found one of these claim jumpers on their site." However, Jackie concedes that there may be some confusion over the issue because Tasman District Council states in its plan that small scale mining with a suction dredge is a permitted activity and doesn’t require a resource consent. He

says council needs to make it clear that the government automatically owns all gold and it is illegal to mine for gold without getting a permit from NZPM. "I've spoken to the council to try and clear up any possible confusion and they have said they will look into it. We don't want to convict anyone when they genuinely think they aren't doing anything illegal." Enforcement officers from NZPM will be carrying out inspections around the Tapawera district "over the coming months." However, Jackie admits that claim jumping is extremely difficult to police because gold mining is usually carried out in remote areas by "highly mobile guys who head into the bush for a week with a suction dredge and tent." It is the second time that claim jumpers have hit the headlines around Tapawera, after a Nelson gold miner complained that at least $100,000 of gold had been taken illegally from his mining operation on the Tadmor River in 2013. The man had a 10 year permit to mine 7.9 hectares of the river, but claimed half a dozen other miners moved in with their suction dredges and "went hard" as soon as word got out that he was seeking a permit.

The gun sounded and he was off: local boy Ben Walker cleaned up the competition at his first Colgate Games. Nelson hosted this year’s Colgate Games and the 39 Athletics Nelson entrants made the most of their home turf advantage. First timer Ben Walker claimed a gold in the grade 11 boys 4x100 metre relay, a silver in the grade 10 boys long jump and a bronze in the grade 10 boys high jump with a personal best of 1.26 metres. Ben also got a personal best in the long jump, leaping to a massive 4.33 metres, almost three times his own height. Ben says stepping up to a national level is a bit of a challenge but that was his favourite part. “I get to compete against other people from other parts of New Zealand and I get to see how I compare to them.” Athletics Nelson’s Sophie Wemyss and Sam Newson also medalled, Sophie received a bronze for her 1600 metre race walk, and Sam took home a

Dress up competition for Warriors match

You’ve seen the outfits at the Wellington 7s, watched the crowd party at the Auckland 9s – well, the organisers of the Warriors pre-season rugby league game want to bring the same atmosphere to Trafalgar Park. Organiser Aldo Miccio says the game, which will feature the Warriors playing St George Illawarra Dragons on February 20, is about more than just league, so they are running a dress up competition to encourage fun “We want to build on the whole party element and festival atmosphere happening, and make it a big deal. The 7s and 9s have done a good job of it so there’s no point reinventing the wheel.” People can enter in pairs at the park and the outfit judged best will earn the owners a trip for two to Auckland. The package will include flights from Air New Zealand, accommodation at Sky City and tickets to the Warriors match against Manly on April 7. Aldo says momentum is building for the game, being dubbed the Battle of Trafalgar, with around 5000 tickets already sold. Tickets can be purchased from Ticketek.

In August 2015, in response to a number of highly publicised crashes at the intersection of Main Road Stoke and Elms Street, Council officers and local representatives from the New Zealand Police undertook a crash reduction study of the site. The study found a very high risk of crashes resulting in death or serious injury and recommended urgent improvements to the layout of the intersection. It is proposed to better match the speed of vehicles on Main Road Stoke to the visibility available to drivers turning out of Elms Street. Lowering speeds has a direct effect on crash survival and injury rates. If this recommendation is accepted, the speed limit on Main Road Stoke between Orphanage Stream and Salisbury Road will be permanently reduced to 60 km/h.

The Nelson Striders competed in their annual half marathon and 10km event up Maitai Valley over the weekend. The unique event was established after members of the group, who were out on a Sunday morning jog up the Maitai Valley in 1994, came dangerously close to disaster after encountering a wild boar. Fortunately, Maitai Dam caretaker Trevor Ruffell came to the res-

cue, and ever since then runners have been competing to take home the prestigious Trevor Ruffell Tusk Trophy. Runners must estimate their time over the 21.1km distance up the valley and whoever guesses closest takes home the trophy. Around 110 people took part in the half marathon and 10km, several of them from outside Nelson and even New Zealand. This year the winner of the Trevor Ruffell Tusk Trophy, aka The Boars Jaw’s, was Nel-

son’s Simon Leaning who was just three seconds off his estimated time. Second place went to Amber Lawson from North Canterbury with 14 seconds, followed by Nelson’s Kimble Rawson with 15 seconds. In the 10km event, Lizzie Tai of Motueka took out first place with the exact time, followed by Nelson’s Maria Hillier with seven seconds and a draw between Iona Fitchett and Jeff Leckey for third place with eight seconds.

The Tasman Bay Snapper Classic is coming up on February 20 and organiser Troy Dando says an awesome response from sponsors has provided a top prize of a boat, motor and trailer worth more than $10,000. It will go to the competitor who catches closest to the average weight of all the snapper weighed in on the day. "As long as you catch a snapper you have a chance of winning it," Dando says. "Most average weight snapper competition winners have fish in the 1.53 kilogram range and, as we know, Tasman Bay is full of that size snapper at the moment." He predicted a fish weighing 1.98kg would win the boat. As well as the boat prize of a DNA 300 dinghy with an 8hp Honda outboard and trailer, there are also prizes for the 1st-15th heaviest snapper, the heaviest kingfish, heaviest kaha-

A separate category covers the first to third heaviest snapper caught by women, and there's a hotly-contested teams prize, won for three years in a row by the Wurth NZ team, "Wurth a Shot". Fishing begins at 5am, with weighin at the Speights Ale House from 12 until 4pm. There will be a fish auction from 4pm until 5pm and then the prizegiving.
